Forty years ago, on the first Earth Day, there was no Internet, no blogs, no cell phones, no cable television. In fact, teenagers of the 21st century would probably consider the era that spawned the environmental movement a modern Dark Ages.

From a technology perspective, it certainly was. And, when it came to protecting the environment, we were in desperate need of a Renaissance. Census offers glimpse of oceans’ smallest lifeforms

Modern technology has opened the world of marine microbes to scientists

The lastest data to be released by the Census of Marine Life (CoML) focuses on "hard to see" species. One of the new creatures to be described by scientists is this "squid worm", recorded at a depth of 2.8km in the Celebes Sea.

– Study shows multitasking lets you use only half your brain

For those who find it tough to juggle more than a couple things at once, don’t despair. The brain is set up to manage two tasks, but not more, a new study suggests.

That’s because, when faced with two tasks, a part of the brain known as the medial prefrontal cortex divides so that half of the region focuses on one task and the other half on the other task. Backwards alien planets challenge theories
